The routine variable, GDLIN, is a dummy variable for whether the applicants credit history meets institutional guidelines. The reference category for this variable is an applicant with credit history that does not meet these standards.
The second category of variables covers demographic information.



The first variable in this group is MARRIED, a dummy variable that indicates the marriage status of the mortgage applicant; the reference category is an unmarried applicant. The second demographic variable included, BLACK, is a dummy variable for the race of the applicant; the reference category is a white loan applicant. The last demographic variable, HISPAN, is a dummy variable for ethnicity, indicating whether a mortgage applicant was Hispanic. For this variable the reference category is a non-Hispanic applicant. Under Federal government census criteria the categories of race and ethnicity are distinct and and so the groups can overlap; however, in the provided sample set, the three groups (white, black, and Hispanic) are mutually exclusive categories.
