The earlyish figurers, between 1940s 1950s, had no direct systems. These programmers of these early computers interacted with the computer hardware. The computers consisted of display lights, toggle switches, input devices and a printer. Card readers or other devices loaded programs into the machine. If an error occurred during this process it was indicated by the lights on the computer. If the program proceeded to a normal completion, the output appeared on the printer. The early systems of the computers presented two main problems; they were scheduling and setup time. These operations were termed attendant processing, reflects the fact that users have access to the computer in series. Tools such as libraries of common functions, linkers, loaders, debuggers, and I/O number one wood routines became common software.

DOS 2.0 allowed directories to contain subdirectories and contained a richer set of commanded embedded in to the operating system. After IBM introduced the PC AT Microsoft released another version of DOS. This operating system supported new keyboard and hard disk peripherals.
