Because of the vast amount of immigrants arriving at the same time, housing was in great demand as was jobs.
Housing wasn’t practically give on land than the ships they arrived in. The Irish were segregated and were squeeze to move to small areas called shanties or slums. The problems that came with living in the slums was that sickness spread quickly and the crime rate rose because of the give-and-take they received by Americans (Daw, 2009). The landlords in Boston were no better than the landlords in their beloved Ireland that kicked them aside on the streets during the potato famine. The clean landlords would charge a family $1.50 a week for a nine-by-eleven board with no ventilation, daylight, running water or indoor sanitation.

The only jobs that the Irish men were able to obtain were low paying jobs that others constitute fit for only the Irish. In some cases they would clear for l cents a day, it wasn’t much pay but it was pretend (Sunflower, n.d.). Irish women cleaned the homes of rich white people or work in factories if they wanted to work (Daw, 2009).
Irish were at the privy of the patience ladder in the United States, black slaves were considered as property and an owner would not want to lose either due to an unsafe job because it would mean that it would be an out of pocket expense. Therefore the Irish were restricted to dock labor or high risk of injury jobs and discriminated against with the glass ceilings.
