If marriage were to be based on religion there would not be legal guidelines of such to state the legal requirement of a marriage than to just the guidelines a religion sets out. For example, there is a marriage act that defines marriage itself and most people would keep up to what defines a marriage for the law instead of defining it to how their religion would define it. According to the law, marriage is a legal fill and certain requirements must be met for a marriage to be valid.
These requirements are set out in the Marriage Act inmost cases, people who marry must be of mature age, not be closely related be of the turnaround sex, be free to marry and making a unforced commitment. These guidelines are mostly legal guidelines, which everyone follows unlike religion guidelines.
